We started with two great songs about the name of Jesus with “Matchless” and “At Your Name”. We used the click track from Praise Charts for “More Than Amazing”, which added a lot of great sounds and helped to fill it out and keep us from rushing. There were a few cymbal crashes on the loop, though, that Christine didn’t play on the drums, which was a bit strange.

I had asked Zack to play an offertory on the guitar this week, and as the week went on, it evolved into him doing the song “Divine Romance” by Phil Wickham, which turned out great!! Zack played acoustic, with drums, bass guitar and accordion (on my keyboard). He did a super job!

Closing out the service after the message, we used “I Will Follow” by Chris Tomlin. The 9:30 service went great, but at the 11:00, I forgot to change the keyboard from accordion back to piano, so needless to say, we had a very interesting start to “I Will Follow” in that service! I tried to casually joke about it, and we re-started the song, and all was well. Some of the team, though, thought I should have kept it!

You can see the Planning Center details and the video for this service. I’ve included the video of Zack Burtness singing “Divine Romance” below.

I had the privilege of leading in the Cafe this morning, and I always enjoy when I get the chance. We had a smaller team today with just me on the keyboard, 1 singer and acoustic guitar. You can see the Planning Center details for this service.

Rick led the team in the Traditional Service today, and from what I heard, things went well. Pastor Tim gave a message about serving today, and really did a great job of challenging people to get in the game and serve in a ministry. He highlighted each ministry, including the worship ministry, and by the end of the day, I had 5 new volunteers for the worship ministry!! Quite interestingly, there were two other sources that provided inspiration for this powerful song. Can you guess? To find out, you should check out the interview with The City Harmonic on the latest All About Worship podcast, a great resource for worship leaders!! Enjoy!

We used the Paul Baloche version, along with a the click track from Praise Charts. I like the Baloche version better than the original by Brewster! They’re both great, but this seems to be a bit more congregationally friendly. I used Psalm 55:22 to introduce the song.

All of our arrangements this week were from Praise Charts, and we used the click track for all the songs. Our team has really settled in nicely with using click tracks! All four songs today just felt so comfortable and tight with the clicks! We changed up the harmonies a bit on this song today, since we had the full worship choir.

If you’re not familiar with this one, check it out! It’s on Matt Redman’s latest CD, 10,000 Reasons, and is such a powerful anthem! I love the progression of the lyrics in each verse, from “what eyes” to “our eyes” to “all eyes”. We introduced this song last week, and already people seemed to know it well and sang out.

What a great morning of worship! We had a huge turnout in our worship choir today, even two of our pastors sang with today! We actually had more guys that we had ladies today, for the first time! It’s so cool to see that ministry growing and new people added! Pastor Tim continued his series on revisiting our vision statement at the start of a new year. We talked about “Grow”, the second part of our discipleship process – “Connect, Grow, Serve, Go”.

Well, I’ve taken a break for the last few weeks from writing these Sunday Recaps, so it’s good to get back into the routine! As much as I love Christmas music, I’m always happy to get back into the regular worship songs and get some new stuff going in January. I was gone last week on vacation, so things felt normal today for the first time in a long while! We started with “God Is With Us Now”, a nice up-beat opener from Gateway Worship that works well as a call to worship. Our theme today was focused around worship, so our senior pastor asked me if I would share a few of my thoughts on worship in the service. I’ve never preached a full sermon before, and this was only a 5 minute talk, but there sure was a lot of extra stress for me today knowing I had to both lead the songs and speak! I think it went fine, but I told the Sr. Pastor that if I had to speak this week, he had to sing a solo next week and preach! (He didn’t go for it…)

I followed up my talk on worship with introducing a new song – “Holy” by Matt Redman; it’s definitely one that I can see becoming a favorite anthem of our church! What a great song! Interesting piano part at the start – kind of tricky to sing and play, though! After the message before Communion we sang “In Christ Alone”, and during communion we used “Lead Me To The Cross” and “Nothing But The Blood”. You can watch the video of this service and see the Planning Center details.

Marv led the team in the Cafe service today, along a full team! Denise did a great job on the flute part today for “In Christ Alone”! I didn’t hear much of this service since I was leading in the Traditional, but thanks to the whole team for a great job!
I know it’s not a new song, but this was the first time we’ve used “Before the Throne of God Above” in a service here. It worked well for Communion, one I’m sure we’ll use again. You can see the Planning Center details for this service.

Yes, it was a Chris Tomlin Christmas celebration! I’ve just found that the arrangements on his “Glory in the Highest” CD are some of the best contemporary arrangements of familiar Christmas carols for congregational use. We had the Worship Choir singing this morning as well as the worship team, and Pastor Tim asked if we could prepare a couple of extra songs for this week. I said – sure! So, we started with Darlene Zschech’s “Hallelujah”, and older song, but still one of my favorites. We had just the choir/team sing this one more as a special, and it worked great for a little slower, more reflective call to worship. Then we kicked it into high gear with Tomlin’s “Joy To The World (Unspeakable Joy)” and “Angels We Have Heard On High”. One of my favorite new Christmas songs is “My Soul Magnifies the Lord”, also from Tomlin. We used a click track from Praise Charts for that song, and also added the congregation this year as well. Then, during the offering, the choir/teams sang one more special – a brand new one for us this year by Meredith Andrews called “He Has Come For Us (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen), a terrific song that worked well with solo and choir. After a message from Pastor Tim that touched on not missing Christmas because we’re too busy with Christmas, we ended with “Glory In The Highest”, a worship song of the angels.

It was a wonderful morning of praise, and I so appreciated everyone’s involvement this morning – they all did a super job!! You can see the Planning Center details and also watch the video of the service.

Zack led the team in the Cafe this morning, and the songs were the same as the Contemporary, minus the two specials. The Cafe crew had a break last week with the Children’s Christmas musical taking the morning services. It was nice to see it back in action today!
This is the service where we sing all of our Christmas carols the “old-fashioned” way - right from the hymnal with piano and organ. Nothing fancy, or new arrangements, but it’s great! Just singing out the carols as I learned them as a kid. Rick did a great job on “O Holy Night” to complete the service.
Christmas is underway at Bethel! We kicked things off with Third Day’s version of “O Come All Ye Faithful”, which is a very singable, upbeat arrangement of the classic carol. One of the guys in our church, Barry (not this Barry), sang a song by Denver and the Mile High Orchestra during the offering – “Born Tonight”. It gave our band a nice challenge to play, and Barry did great on the solo. Celebrating communion along with Christmas is always a challenge, but “Jesus Messiah” worked well as a nice bridge between the two themes – praising him for being both our Messiah and Immanuel along with our Redeemer and Savior, and several communion references. During communion we used “Stronger” and “Amazed”. I actually wrote a new verse that we used with “Amazed” – same chorus, new verse relating to the cross. You can watch the video of this service and see the Planning Center details.

This service at Christmastime is where we do all of our traditional Christmas carols, so it was nice to start the morning off with familiar songs to help us ring in the Christmas season. With Communion also today, I pulled out “A Communion Hymn for Christmas”, which is a nice text contrasting the manger and the cross. You can watch the video of this service and see the Planning Center details.

We celebrated Thanksgiving one more time this week, even though some may have started the Christmas season this week. Most of the songs we used this morning were a bit older, and well-known. I added one new song this morning, so I wanted to be sure the other songs were familiar, as well as focused on our theme of Thanksgiving this morning. We had a Baloche/Hillsong/Tommy Walker morning! It’s been a while since we’ve pulled out “Worthy Is the Lamb”, but what a powerful song, and it tied in so well with our Thanksgiving focus. The new song was one from Tommy Walker’s Overflow CD, called “I Give Thanks”. If you’re not familiar with it, check it out; it’s a great song for Thanksgiving with an easy to learn chorus and that familiar Tommy Walker sound. You can watch the video of this service and also see the Planning Center details for this service.

Zack led the team this morning in the Cafe, and following along the Thanksgiving theme, chose some great songs! We had a little glitch with the Picture in Picture on our video feed today.
Another great morning of worship today! Pastor Tim was gone, so we had one of the missionaries that we support, Paul Hill, missionary to Argentina, speak this morning. The songs went well this morning, with the team doing a great job on their parts. We started with “Rising”, a favorite tune from Paul Baloche, and a great way to open the service. Today was the first day using a click/loop on “Revelation Song”, and it really helped to hold things together, keep a reign on the tempo, and add in some extra sounds. We bumped it up to 64, instead of the original tempo of 60. That’s one thing I love about using Ableton Live! If the tempo feels too slow, you can just speed it up and the loop maintains the tuning, even at a faster speed.

We had an unfortunate incident occur in one of our services today. A woman had a medical issue, passed out, and an ambulance had to be called. They brought in a stretcher and took her away in the ambulance. Please pray for Sharon, we haven’t heard any updates yet today. But, it was a question of what to do during the service. It happened as our guest speaker was delivering the message. He stopped and we took time to pray for her as it became clear what was going on. But then, as we were waiting for the ambulance to come, and as the stretcher took her out, he continued to preach. People were distracted as the nurse and people around her were helping her out, but he remained calm and focused. We did end up skipping the last song, which was an upbeat praise song, and ended with a time of prayer for her. Have you had anything like that happen in a service before? How did you handle it? How would you have handled this?

I always enjoy the opportunity to lead worship in the Cafe. I usually use many of the same songs as in the Contemporary, but today I did change out one. Marv introduced a new song last week in here, and I repeated it this week. ”Taste and See” is a nice tune by Tommy Walker that he taught us last summer at a worship conference. You can see the Planning Center details for this service.

This evening we had our annual Pie and Praise Service, where we gather together to give thanks and praise for all God has done in our lives. It’s always a wonderful time of testimonies, music, and of course pie! We had three people planned ahead to give their testimonies, and then two times for open mic, where anyone could share with the church what they are thankful for. I also used a video from Shift Worship, called “The Thanksgiving Chair”, a simple yet powerful reminder to give thanks in all circumstances. It was a really great service! You can watch the video of this service, or see the Planning Center details.

We used a couple of tunes from the last Passion CD with “Here For You” and “All My Fountains”. We did “Here For You” in Bb and “All My Fountains” in B. The loop from Praise Charts on “All My Fountains” really helped to hold things together. ”Great I Am” is just such a powerful song! The worship choir, worship team singers, band and congregation all joined together in this powerful song of worship! We did The People’s Church version of “Your Great Name”, not Natalie Grant’s version. The harmonies add so much to the song! Zack did a super job on the lead for “Follow You” today by Leeland. You can watch the video for this service as well as see the Planning Center details.

Marv led the team in the Cafe, and I loved the new songs he introduced! “Waiting Here For You” is also from the latest Passion project, with a nice solo (Christy Nockels on the recording). It’s makes for a great call to worship. The other new one was “Taste and See” from Tommy Walker’s latest project. This song works great in this acoustic setting in the Cafe – guitar, percussion and vocals are all you need for this song. You can see the Planning Center details for this service.

Pastor Tim finished his series on generosity today, with a challenge from 2 Corinthians, and the team did a great job on the hymns. We used a clip from a Beverly Hillbillies episode that tied in perfectly with the theme. You can see the video from this service and see the Planning Center details.

What a powerful morning of worship we had today! God is so good! That’s really all there is to say! I would feel strange talking about how good our team was, or how well things flowed, because that would seem to take away from what God did at our services. But, I just have to say thank you for a job so well done to our team! It’s been a while since we’ve used “O, The Blood”, but wow, what an amazing song of worship! It led our congregation into a time of taking communion together, as we focused on the cross with “How Deep….” and “You Gave Your Life Away”. If you haven’t heard “Bless The Lord” yet, by Jared Anderson, check it out! It’s a great service opener, and a fun song of praise to sing/play! You can watch the video of this service and also see the Planning Center details.

Zack led the team in the Cafe, and they sounded great! I loved the songs that Zack chose this week, and he even found an additional second verse to “All The Earth” that I had never heard before. I guess Paul added another verse when he released it on The Writers Collection CD. Very cool! You can see the Planning Center details for this service.

“O Sacred Head Now Wounded”

“Worthy Is The Lamb”

We had a great service in the Traditional this morning as well. Familiar hymns with one of the very old praise choruses thrown in. “O Sacred Head” was challenging to sing, but we did the third verse a capella, and the team did a great job on the tricky harmonies! Pastor Tim began a series on generosity this morning as well. You can watch the video of this service and see the Planning Center details.
